Hello Erasmus and congratulations for your excellent "Sanguinus
Nocturnus". One of the best work we've listened months. Talk to us about
your moniker, artwork, title and lyrics.
Thank you very much! Erasmus is taken from St. Erasmus, patron saint
of
mariners and a very interesting martyr. "Sanguinus Nocturnus" (night
blood in latin)
was
done in an ocean theme and based
on
"Rime
of the Ancient Mariner" by Cooleridge.
The album art is a medieval naval battle
and the track "Sanguinus Nocturnus" is all about
a
raging sea
and the struggle of lost souls. The lyrics in the other songs mostly
deal with
depression, denouncing the ways of man,
and my testimonies of God's healing.
Can you give a short description of the project and its members, please?
Erasmus is spiritually driven depressive psychedelic black metal band,
haha. At the moment our line-up is M. Owen from Mankind (everything on
the recordings, guitar and vocals live), Thaddeus Cathedral from Manking
and Ruach Nephesh (live guitar, back up vocals), Adam Tanaka from Ill
Patriot and Foxhole (live drums), and TJ from War Of Ages and Mortal
Treason (live bass).
Musically, what are your main influences? (I'm guessing Antestor,
My Dying Bride and Pink Floyd!) What are your favourite
christian and secular metal albums?
I love all of those bands (clearly!). The writing and recording of "Sanguinus
Nocturnus" was pretty heavily influenced by bands like Wolves in the
Throne Room, Drudkh, Emperor, 1349...and some off the wall stuff like
Fleet Foxes, Grouper, and Mineral.
Right now I'm listening to a lot of Eligibbor, Deathspell Omega, Portal,
and Chaos Moon. My favorite
Christian
metal album is probably Antestor - The Foresaken or Zao - Liberate te ex
inferis.
My favorite
metal album is Slayer - Reign in Blood, Emperor - In the Nightside
Eclipse in a very close
second.
What
is the songs composition process in Erasmus?
With
Erasmus
I try to do everything by chance. I like to never second guess myself
and let the songs
write themselves. I usually program drums without a particular song in
mind...then I record guitar piece by piece around the drum track.
Any future plans? We're hoping to hear a full-length soon!
We'll be playing at the Sanctuary stage at Cornerstone Fest this summer
and we're releasing our full length "Memento Mori I: Outrecuidance" on
Sullen Records this year. Be on the look-out!
What are your opinions about american extreme christian metal and the
secular metal scene?
American christian metal is doing great as far as being original, real,
honest, and influential. It's fantastic that great christian metal bands
in America are doing well enough to do bigger tours and support
themselves.
Secular metal is in a great place right now. It's a transitional period
from tired and boring nu-metal into new interesting and heartfelt genres
of metal. There are many bands like Portal and Deathspell Omega that
amaze me at how far they stretch the boundaries of metal and even music
in general for that matter.
Some suggestions for people that want to start listening and playing
unblack metal?
Google "Horde"...Get a translator to tell you what "Hellig Usvart"
means. Rip off some immortal riffs....steal them from Satan and give
them to God...that
seems to work hahaha.
In what ways have you become
a christian metal musician?
The
white metal scene is growing and improving. What are your thoughts about
it?
I've been a Christian artist since about 2003, after
I found God I never used my talent without using it
for Him. The white metal scene is about to get
huge. There are tons and tons of really good unblack bands coming up and
releasing records. Sullen and EEE are doing a great job of picking up
newer unblack artists and helping them share their music and message to
a wide audience. Bands like Gondolin, O' Majestic Winter, Elan, and
Elgibbor.
Are you active as a live artist? Will we ever get the chance to see you
in Italy?
We haven't played a show yet but we've been practicing regularly and
will be ready to play in time to do Cornerstone. And I would love to
come to Italy!!! if you can arrange that, let me know! haha.
Lastly, leave a farewell to italian fans and readers of WhiteMetal.it
